Has Anyone Though That 700,000 Cars Traded in on Obama’s “Cash for Clunkers”?
Question by Jason: Has anyone though that 700,000 cars traded in on Obama’s “Cash for Clunkers”?
that those of us who can not afford new cars will face higher used car prices?
Many of the cars traded in were used cars that were still in good shape. Not all of the cars traded in were rust buckets.
It is truely amazing to me that most of the liberals who answered this question didn’t know that the cars traded in under this program must be destroyed. Blindly agreeing with The Great Obama without even knowing what he is doing.

no, there isn’t really a market for very old cars, except ones which are collectors, the demand for a pice of crap won’t increase
Ha-ha, you’re poor!
yep and many people was worried about their job security and didn’t fall for the scam which was basically to get the credit moving again from bank to bank. Who in the right mind would trade in a paid off vehicle for a new vehicle with payments attached to it in this poor economy? Only those that have money and job security of course.
Passed by a used car lot a couple of days ago. A lot of nice cars going for under 5 grand.
I’m not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. The cash for clunkers program, as I understand it, only applied to the purchase of new cars. I’m not sure what happens to the “clunkers,” but it seems like there should be an abundance of used cars now. People who would have likely purchased a used car took advantage of the program and picked up a new car, therefore leaving even more good used cars on the car lots. The longer a used car sits on a dealer’s lot, the more it costs the dealer and the more likely they are to make you a good deal.
Please, there is plenty of junk cars left. I see them in the paper all the time and on Ebay.Wow 700,000 cars that most probably would have just left sitting it their back yards. Program was a sucess, get over it.
The more I think of that program I get so frustrated, some of the nicer ones could have been donated to charities such as Meals for seniors, or people in Transition, but no they all get crushed some appeared to be really nice too, I had such high hopes for this administration, they just keep bumming me out more by the day,
Here in the United States, the capitalist system works on the supply and demand basis. If, in your scenario, there are now more used cars on the market that generally means that the price will go down. I don’t know how it is in your country, but that’s the way American capitalism is. Also, there is a ‘t’ at the end of thought. Maybe you didn’t know that not having had one. Thought, that is.
Gonzo….
The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.
Unfortunately…..
Charities that accept cars as donations, however, lose out
Car donations to the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Miami were off sharply in July, according to Lt. Jay Ward, the administrator of the center, which funds drug and alcohol treatment centers for 108 patients.
“If the Cash for Clunkers program continued and our car donations stayed down, and if we could not find a way to restore income, we’d have to cut beds,” Ward told The Miami Herald.
Charity Cars, Longwood, Fla. President Brian Menzies said he’s frustrated that the program sends usable cars to the scrap heap. “They could have accomplished this task and also helped the poor as well by mandating that those vehicles that were in good enough shape be donated to poor people,
Vehicles already were lined up for one of the weekly auto auctions benefiting Texans Can, a charity that helps at-risk teenagers and their families, when prospective donors started to call, saying they had changed their minds Cheryl Rios, vice president of the Dallas-based charity that serves as many as 6,000 students. She estimates that Texas Can already has lost $ 75,000 to the federal program.
Goodwill Industries International Inc. uses the $ 14.5 million it gets from the 28,000 donated vehicles it receives each year to fund job training programs. While not jumping to conclusions about the effect on donations, the Rockville, Md.-based charity is “somewhat dubious about it,” said its president and chief executive, Jim Gibbons.
Yet again another “not completely solid program” Not much thought process in destroying perfectly running vehicles.
